About us

Utopian Potato Seeds is a Kenyan agribusiness dedicated to empowering smallholder farmers with affordable, high-quality certified seed potatoes.
From day one, our approach has been farmer-first.

Utopian Potato Seeds was born from a simple but powerful belief: every farmer—whether planting one acre or ten—deserves access to clean, certified, and affordable seed potatoes.

In 2018, we saw a growing challenge across Kenya’s potato-growing regions. Farmers were repeatedly planting recycled ware potatoes, counterfeit seed, or uncertified materials—leading to low yields, high disease pressure, and poor income. Many smallholder farmers wanted to improve their productivity, but quality seed was either too expensive or too difficult to access.

We knew Kenya could grow more, earn more, and feed more—if farmers had the right starting point. So we decided to build it. Growing With Farmers, Not Just For Them.
We spent time in Nyandarua, Nakuru, Mau Narok, Meru, Elgeyo Marakwet and other key potato zones, listening to farmers, learning their challenges, and understanding their planting decisions.

What we heard was clear:

  • Seed was too costly for smallholder farmers
  • Supply was inconsistent and unreliable
  • Most farmers lacked access to certified planting materials
  • Counterfeit or recycled seed was destroying yields
  • Agronomic guidance was limited or unavailable
We didn’t want to be just another seed company. We wanted to solve these problems—practically and sustainably.

Building a Trusted Seed System

We began sourcing clean, disease-free mini-tubers from KALRO, Kenya’s leading agricultural research institution. Using these foundation materials, we established controlled seed-multiplication farms across multiple counties.
Every stage—from planting to inspection to harvesting—is done under strict KEPHIS-certified standards to ensure purity, vigor, and field performance.
Over time, our systems grew, our production expanded, and our agronomy team broadened. But our mission stayed the same: Reliable certified seed, at a price every farmer can afford.

Why Affordability Matters

We understand that seed is one of the biggest investments a smallholder farmer makes. For many, the difference between Kshs. 4,000 and Kshs. 5,000+ per bag determines whether they can plant their full acreage—or plant at all.
By keeping our prices among the most affordable in the market, we remove the biggest barrier standing between farmers and higher yields.
This is not just business for us: It is our contribution to food security, income generation, and rural transformation.
Shangi Potato Seeds

The Variety That Built Us

Our flagship product, Shangi, is Kenya’s most popular potato variety—fast-maturing, high-yielding, and ideal for quick returns. Its ability to deliver 3–4 cycles per year makes it a perfect match for farmers seeking predictable income.
Today, we also multiply other varieties based on market demand and farmer preference, including Dutch Robijn, Tigoni, and emerging high-potential varieties.

Impacting Farmers Across Kenya

From our early beginnings, we now serve farmers across:
  • Nyandarua
  • Nakuru
  • Meru
  • Elgeyo Marakwet
  • Bomet
  • Nyeri
  • Uasin Gishu
  • Trans Nzoia
And beyond
Every season, thousands of farmers trust us with their planting materials. Every season, we commit ourselves to justifying that trust.

Our Journey Continues

Our story is still being written—through every farmer we serve, every field we support, and every harvest that feeds a family.
  • We are more than a seed company.
  • We are partners in productivity, growth, and transformation.
And as we look to the future, our promise remains simple: Clean seed. Fair price. Better harvests for Kenya’s farmers.
