Whether you grow one acre or a hundred, we are here to support your journey with certified seed, practical agronomy guidance, and a farmer-first experience designed to deliver better harvests and better livelihoods.
Our Story - Where it all begun
Utopian Potato Seeds was born from a simple but powerful belief: every farmer—whether planting one acre or ten—deserves access to clean, certified, and affordable seed potatoes.
In 2018, we saw a growing challenge across Kenya’s potato-growing regions. Farmers were repeatedly planting recycled ware potatoes, counterfeit seed, or uncertified materials—leading to low yields, high disease pressure, and poor income. Many smallholder farmers wanted to improve their productivity, but quality seed was either too expensive or too difficult to access.
We knew Kenya could grow more, earn more, and feed more—if farmers had the right starting point.
So we decided to build it. Growing With Farmers, Not Just For Them
How we work
we source mini tubers from certified sources, cultivate, and sell premium quality seed potatoes locally
Source mini tubers
- Source mini tubers from KALRO, or other KEPHIS- accredited suppliers
- Transport the mini tubers to our farms using a disinfected pick-up truck to reduce spread of diseases
Cultivate seed potatoes
- Farms are subdivided to facilitate crop rotation across 2 seasons in the year
- Mini tuber production starts in 1 acre, generating enough breeders for planting in 10 acres. 25% of harvested breeders are sold locally and the rest replanted in own farms
- Pre-basic and basic is then replanted across 75 acres to cultivate C1, ensuring a high standard of production quality
Sell Seed Potatoes Locally
- Post-harvest, KEPHIS conducts tests and approves our produce for certification and labeling
- Pre-basic and basic, and C1 produce is then sold to local farmers for cultivation
- Additionally, a portion of harvested produce is set aside for replanting to sustain the seed potato supply chain
Our Impact on Smallholder Farmers
My farming prospects changed when a friend recommended using certified seed potatoes from Utopian Supplies. My yield increased sixfold, from 40 bags to 240 bags. With these returns, I have managed to increase my cattle herd, build a good house and lease additional land for planting more potatoes
